Welcome to
The power of
Shamanism

Throughout human history, the shaman's purpose has been to serve their community.

Traditionally, shamans were healers, seekers of truth, peacemakers, and keepers of wisdom. Most of all, shamans were the ones who could see beyond our physical world into the world of spirit—the true ground of reality.

Today, our community is global. Never before have we been more aware of our interdependence and connection—with each other and with the natural world.

Is it any wonder shamanism—the oldest spiritual tradition—is now on the rise?

In this landmark gathering of teachers and healers from around the world, Sounds True invites you to discover The Power of Shamanism.

“The times that we live in call for us to be willing to seek out the guidance of the helping spirits. This also means that we must own our power and find new and unique ways of working with each other.”

what makes shamanism so powerful?

The modern expression of shamanism is a spiritual path built on practical tools, respect for each other and our environment, and deep connection with the spirit world. The foundations that support any shamanic practice are:

  • service

Shamanic practice serves your own spiritual growth, the needs of your community, and the planet itself. The skills you learn will help you become a unique force of light and healing in the world.

  • discovery

Shamanism is not about dogma—it is about exploration, insight, and transformation. Shamanism excludes nothing, and welcomes the wisdom of science and other spiritual traditions.

  • connection

As you practice, you will deepen your connection to your ancestors, the forces of nature, and divine energy. Shamans understand that everything is alive and has a spirit you can connect to.

  • community

The practice of shamanism becomes more powerful as we work together with shared purpose. You’ll learn how to connect to other practitioners and those seeking positive change in the world.

  • sovereignty

Shamanism is called the “path of direct revelation.” While we respect and honor all traditions, the practice you create will be based on your experiences, your unique gifts, and your truth.

  • spirit

Shamanism recognizes spirit as the ultimate ground of reality and the true source of our ability to create change. You’ll learn time-tested practices for calling upon the aid of allies in the spirit world.

Shamanism is always evolving

The modern evolution of shamanism is not attached to one specific culture, nor is its purpose to preserve an unchanging legacy of any single tradition. Global shamanism has arisen to serve the needs of the modern world and the community of the planet.

This emerging and ever-growing practice is informed by science, indigenous practices, spiritual traditions—and most of all, the personal experiences of each dedicated practitioner.

When you engage in your own shamanic practice, you contribute to the growth of this powerful movement toward peace, healing, and reverence for all life.

With The Power of Shamanism online summit, we've gathered top teachers from around the world who are dedicated to sharing their best practices and wisdom to help our global community, including:

Four Archetypes of the Wounded Healer: Jung and Shamanism in Synthesis

C.G. Jung, the pioneering analytical psychologist, spent time visiting shamans and medicine men in East Africa and in the American Southwest. He came to see the shaman's heart-path as an age-old prototype of the path of individuation, centering on four major archetypes—The Archetype of the Wounded Healer, the Archetype of the Self, the Archetypal Shadow, and the Archetypal Feminine. In this session, C. Michael “Mikkal” Smith shows you how these archetypes shed light on the ways you can clarify your life calling, and live an openhearted and earth-honoring life. Join him to explore:

  • The four major archetypes of the Wounded Healer and their importance in daily life
  • How your own heart and your Guardian Spirit can help you navigate the paths of shamanic healer and/or your own individuation
  • How the Archetype of You (Jung's Self Archetype) lives in your heart and can be accessed
  • How the Wounded Healer Initiation is an ongoing process, including ongoing Shadow work

Recapitulation: Reclaiming Your Inner Fire

Recapitulation is a Toltec tool that enables us to reclaim our energy from the past. Energetically speaking, we look like colanders because we're unable to hold our energy for ourselves. This constant leakage renders us reactive and vulnerable to energy outside of ourselves. To be "at choice" and present in our lives, we need to learn how to recognize, reclaim, and store this vital life energy for ourselves. In this session, HeatherAsh shares the method of Recapitulation to help you retain your energy and reclaim your inner fire. Here you will discover:

  • Why every agreement you make takes energy
  • Why you have less energy to make choices in the present if your agreements are bound in the past
  • How to work with energy in new ways—a key element of shamanic work
  • Setting clear intentions around recapitulation work in order to channel energy efficiently

Bonus Content:

North American Indigenous Practices for Connecting with Spirit

Interweaving stories from his own family with the accumulated wisdom of several different Native American tribes, Dr. Lewis Mehl-Madrona reveals that our world is full of invisible beings eager to connect with us. Highlighting the immense historical trauma experienced by indigenous peoples, Dr. Mehl-Madrona emphasizes the importance of maintaining ceremonies and rituals that have existed for thousands of years. In sharing these cosmologies, Dr. Mehl-Madrona shows clearly why it is incumbent upon practitioners to cultivate relationships with the invisible realm and all its inhabitants. Here you will learn:

  • Why we can cultivate our own relationships with spirit without needing intercessors of any kind
  • The necessity of working with others to contemplate and interpret messages from spirit
  • People can see visions anywhere, but mentors or elders are necessary to help forge connection with spirit
  • How to nurture the art of deep listening

Bonus Content:

“Dialogue with the Spirit of an Illness”
In this 50-minute guided practice Lewis Mehl-Madrona shows us how to slow down, go within, and meet our illness in the deepest state of dialogue available to us. Once there, he shows us how to reclaim the nutrients and well-being that have been siphoned by the illness.

Under Ladamira's guidance, you will move toward answering these questions by:

  • Finding what brings you happiness in this lifetime

Sacred Stewardship: Tending to Your Home in Partnership with the Unseen World

All shamanic traditions recognize the importance of cultivating a relationship with the seen and unseen aspects of where you live. By learning how to forge allegiances with these sentries, you will experience an increased sense of well-being, groundedness, and belonging. During Julie's presentation, you'll learn:

He shares shamanic insights into the interconnectedness of all beings and talks about the shamanic calling as it appears, especially in the contemporary West. Here Bhola examines:

  • Types of shamanic calling in traditional Nepalese culture
  • The need for shamans in contemporary culture

Knowing how to be neutral is critical on any spiritual path, but is especially important on the shamanic path. You will learn how becoming neutral can heal the past more quickly, as well as to accelerate and support the path of Spirit. José and Lena will discuss ways to find the path of neutrality in the face of outer turmoil, the pitfalls of self-deception, and methods to open and enter the field of neutrality. Highlights include:

  • Addressing misunderstandings: neutrality is not indecision or passivity
  • Why the ego or false personality is addicted to drama
  • The power of neutrality for releasing past pain and trauma

Byron Metcalf 8 PM EST, March 5, 2018
The Shaman's Heart: Reflections on the Intersection of Shamanism and Psychology

In modern Western society, shamanic practitioners often encounter material that needs to be understood and processed through a psychological framework. Fortunately, the field of transpersonal psychology recognizes the importance of altered consciousness and related phenomena in ways that conventional psychology does not. At the intersection of traditional shamanic thought and transpersonal psychology, Byron Metcalf presents an approach called “The Shaman's Heart”—an integrated practice that views the heart as the cosmological center of all human experience. Here Byron will reveal:

  • The important role of psychology in modern shamanism
  • Why transpersonal psychology is the ideal approach for processing the psychodynamic material of shamanic practice
  • The boundless potential for healing and transformation within the heart center

Sustaining Our Resilience: The Power of Shamanic Renewal

In these turbulent times, shamanic practitioners from around the world are being called upon to use their unique gifts to shepherd a Great Metamorphosis of humankind. The key to remaining energized and effective as you “resist and persist” lies in resetting your emotional balance. In this session, Evelyn connects you with a powerful resource for achieving this balance through the energies of the Norse goddess Freyja in her guise as Gullveig, the giant seeress. Gullveig will help you through a ceremony of spiritual dismemberment—a time-tested ritual of renewal that will help you shed that which no longer serves. In this session, you’ll experience:

  • How to free yourself from the immobilizing grip of fear and anger
  • The role shamans have in creating transformation
  • How the divine feminine is pivotal to your spiritual sustenance at this powerful time

Healing Ancestral Trauma

Ancestral trauma is passed down to us through our DNA, passing from one generation's psyche to the next without cease. Drawing from the wisdom of South Africa's Xhosa tradition, John will reveal how to honor our bones (ancestors) from a place of gratitude and humility, so our own dignity increases and we open to grace on all levels. “In this way,” John says, “we may begin to wake up and appreciate the magnificence of our human birth.” This session will cover:

  • Ancestors as the doorway to the spirit world

Shamanic Practices: Unique and Universal

After a lifetime of studying the roots and interconnections of the world's great wisdom traditions, Roger Walsh has a knack for identifying those aspects of spirituality that are universally shared and those that are singular. Some practices—such as developing concentration, fostering insight, and serving others—are common to many traditions. However, the world's shamanic lineages often differ from other spiritual paths (and each other) both in practice and thought. Here Roger will explore a variety of different shamanic practices, comparing and contrasting each to other traditions. Highlights include:

  • The wide agreement among spiritual practitioners across the world's cultures and traditions that seven specific kinds of practices are essential
  • Shamanic practitioners employ these common practices
  • However, shamanic practitioners also employ a wide array of practices specific to their traditions
